Blockboard (Latte)
A core of solid wood strips standing side by side, sandwiched between two veneers. The strip core makes blockboard light yet very rigid along its length — the classic choice for long shelves, doors and table tops.
The facts
Best uses
- Long shelves
- Doors
- Table & desk tops
- Wardrobes
Watch out for
The edges are its weak point — the strip ends hold screws and fine detail poorly, and cheap boards can have gaps in the core that telegraph through the surface. Edges should be banded or framed.
Engineer's notes
When a client needs a long shelf or a door that stays flat and doesn't weigh a ton, blockboard is often the right answer over plywood or solid wood. Just design for its edges — that is where it needs help.
