Hardwoods
Cherry
Prunus
A refined, satiny hardwood that starts pinkish-brown and deepens to a warm reddish glow over years of light. Cherry is a joy to work and a favourite for fine furniture.
The facts
Best uses
- Fine furniture
- Cabinetry
- Turned & carved objects
- Trim & detail
Watch out for
Cherry darkens noticeably with sunlight, so anything left on top (a vase, a book) can leave a permanent lighter patch early on.
Engineer's notes
Cherry rewards patience. It looks modest when new, then matures into one of the most beautiful surfaces in woodworking. I tell clients to let it bask evenly in light for the first months so it colours uniformly.
